You know how sometimes spring arrives and we don't really see it coming? The weather changes a little, but we hardly notice. Well, cats are different. They seem to know when spring is coming, and you can usually tell by how they act. If your cat suddenly wants to be outside all the time, loves sitting in the sun, and maybe gets into a little more trouble than normal, they might just have spring fever.

What Is Cat Spring Fever?

Warmer weather, green grass, and more outdoor time - that's why many cats love springtime. However, all that sunshine and nice weather can actually cause something called “spring fever” in cats.

Spring fever is a type of seasonal mood shift that occurs in cats (and pets in general) during the spring. They become more restless and energetic than usual. Some cats might even develop separation anxiety or become very clingy. Typically, you'll notice that they seem to have excess energy, are restless, and have difficulty focusing.

Humans can experience something similar, like a common cold or hay fever, but pets often seem to be more affected by this springtime change.

What Causes Spring Fever in Cats?

There are several possibilities. One big reason is that the days get longer in the spring, this can make cats more active and restless because there's just more daylight. Also, with warmer weather, there are more birds and other animals around, which can overstimulate your cat.

Finally, cats can get bored indoors during the winter because there's not much going on, so they have a natural need to burn off energy when spring arrives.

How Do I Know If My Cat Is Experiencing Spring Fever?

Your cat probably won't be destroying the house, even though anything's possible! But keep an eye out for these common signs to see if spring fever is the reason your cat is acting strangely.

Expect Earlier Wake-Up Calls from Your Cat:

Because there's more sunshine (and they want to enjoy it!), you'll probably notice your cat starts waking up much earlier. What does this mean for you? It means you'll likely be waking up earlier too, because your cat will be ready to play. So, don't be surprised if you start getting kitty kisses bright and early.

Extra Energy All of a Sudden:

As we mentioned previously, expect your cat to be extra energetic when spring arrives! Running around like crazy at all hours is pretty common. Maybe they're just excited about the weather, or maybe they're trying to make you as crazy as they feel being stuck inside.

Playing with a laser pointer is a good way to keep your cat active and MIGHT help calm them down. You can also hide treats to make it even more fun and keep their hunting skills sharp. And don't forget the Cat-e-Corner! Scratching is a natural way for cats to relieve stress and energy, so having a post handy can help them work out those spring fever excitement.

Window Watching Becomes a Favorite:

Your cat really wants to go outside and chase those squirrels! Now that it's warmer and more animals are out, your cat will probably spend a lot of time looking out the window.

Loves to Sunbathe:

Springtime is full of sunshine, and your cat wants to enjoy every moment of it! If your cat goes outside, you'll probably find them stretched out on the porch or sidewalk, soaking up the sun. They'll also likely want to spend a lot more time outdoors.

If your cat stays inside, don't be surprised if they spend more time near a window, looking outside and trying to get as close to the sunshine as possible.

Your Cat Wants to Mate:

In the spring, finding a mate becomes the most important thing for cats. You might start hearing special meows that are like mating calls, or see male cats searching for a female cat who's in heat.

What can you do? If you haven't already gotten your cat neutered or spayed, now's the time to talk to your vet and schedule the surgery. There are many good reasons to get your cat altered, and your vet can give you all the details.

More Territorial Than Usual:

Cats usually settle down in the fall, but when spring comes things change. Female cats in heat might roll around more, be extra affectionate, get into a mating position, and do other weird things. Male cats want to protect more space, even if your cat is spayed or neutered, they can still sense the change in seasons and get a little more protective of their area.

If you have more than one cat, make sure each cat has their own space so they don't fight. This means having enough litter boxes for everyone and giving each cat some alone time.

Key Things to Remember About Spring Fever in Cats

To help your cat deal with spring fever, remember these tips:

  • Keep them busy: Give your cat many things to do, both mentally and physically. Try playing different games with them, taking them for walks if they like that, giving them plenty of toys, and making sure they have scratching posts.
  • Let them get some sunshine (but not too much): Let your cat play outside in the sun for a while, but don't let them stay in the sun too long, because it can hurt their skin.
  • Feed them good food: Make sure your cat eats a healthy diet that's full of protein and doesn't have too many carbs.
  • Keep them hydrated and avoid junk food: Make sure your cat drinks enough water, and don't give them sugary treats or processed cat foods.

Give them safe spots: Make sure your cat has multiple places where they can feel safe to explore and hide.

Final Thoughts

Cats get excited about spring just like we do! Even though they might be a little restless with spring fever, remember it's normal. Some extra attention, playtime, and some easy changes at home will help your cat have a safe and happy spring.
