We’re not big on New Year’s resolutions (they rarely stick!), but the start of a new year is the perfect time to pause and think about how things are going, especially with our cats.

Here are 8 cat-friendly resolutions to keep your feline happy and healthy all year long.

New Year's Resolutions for Cat Lovers

1. Keep a Regular Daily Plan

Cats feel good when things are consistent! A big study done during the pandemic showed that many cats got stressed out when their owners' schedules changed. It makes sense - they like things to stay the same.

Try to keep meals, playtime, and cuddle sessions at the same time each day. If your routine changes, adjust gradually so your cat feels secure.

2. Scoop the Litter Box Daily

Cats are naturally clean animals. A dirty litter box is like a gross public restroom - they’d rather avoid it.

Make it a habit to scoop every day and change litter frequently to keep things fresh. This reduces accidents outside the box and keeps your cat more comfortable.

3. Provide Fresh Water & Healthy Food

Cats need fresh, clean water every day. Wash their water bowl weekly to remove buildup, or consider a cat water fountain if they prefer running water.

When it comes to food, choose the best quality you can - ideally high-protein and low-carb. A healthy diet now helps prevent health issues later.

4. Get in More Quality Time

Cats may seem independent, but they love bonding time. Try to play when they’re most active (usually mornings and evenings) and set aside time for calm cuddles afterward.

After they've had their fun, settling down in the evening to relax and cuddle is a lovely way to connect. Make time to just sit and relax together. Not only is it enjoyable, but it really helps strengthen your relationship with them.

5. Keep Your Cat Active

Cats are natural hunters - they need physical and mental stimulation. Short bursts of play (10–15 minutes) with toys like feather wands or toy mice keep them fit and happy.

Switch up toys regularly, use cardboard boxes, or hide treats for extra enrichment. And don’t forget scratching! Cats scratch to stretch, sharpen claws, and relieve stress.

That’s why cat-friendly furniture like Cat-e-Corner is so helpful — it protects your sofa while giving your cat a stylish scratching spot they’ll love.

6. Stay On Top of Vet Visits

If it’s been more than a year since your cat’s last vet visit, make an appointment. Cats age faster than humans, so yearly checkups are essential.

Wellness exams help catch health issues early - especially as your cat gets older. Even small changes in behavior (sleeping more, hiding, eating less) are worth discussing with your vet.

7. Use Treats in Moderation

Treats are great for training and rewards, but too many can cause weight gain. Try offering part of their regular food as a reward or use food puzzles to combine play with eating.

Healthy cats = happy cats!

8. Help Cats in Need

If you're thinking about adding a new cat to your family, consider adoption! There are countless amazing cats in shelters waiting for loving homes.

If adoption isn't the right fit for you at this time, you could support a cat rescue organization through fostering, volunteering at a shelter, or donating supplies!

Wrapping Up Cat Lovers New Years Resolutions

You don’t need to overhaul your life to make your cat happier this year. Simple steps like a cleaner litter box, consistent playtime, or one more vet visit make a big difference. Here’s to a year of love, purrs, and happy moments with your cat!
